Babes on Back

Cow Head to St. Anthony

We awoke to a bright, sunny sky and fabulous ocean view. After a delicious breakfast we were on our way…unfortunately Dwight’s bike developed a problem and we had to pull over. This happened twice and for the next three hours the guys attempted to diagnose the problem. The positive was that it was sunny and cool. While the guys talked to Virgil Kawasaki, Tara and I played crazy 8’s to keep ourselves occupied. Finally, after removing the non-functioning horn, we loaded up and headed back to Cow Head. The bike ran perfectly, so after gassing up we decided to turn around and head to St.Anthony. We rode right along the Gulf of St. Lawrence coast through more than 20 small coves through a variety of topography. To our right was the Long Range Mountains, to our left was the gulf and the ribbon of highway in front of us. We rode for 1.5 hrs. until Alan needed to stop to get more clothes on. We rode for 40 min. more and stopped to stretch our legs. We talked to a young man from St. John who had had a similar problem with his bike and then a fisherman riding a Boulevard who lived further up the road in Savage Cove. Later we waved to him as we rode by his home. The topography changed as we got further up the coast. Labrador and the Strait of Belle Isle was on our left and the land around us was flat, scrubby trees, bog and rocks. Interestingly enough we saw fenced gardens along the road in the bog. People would have to travel a long distance to get their veggies. The last 100 km were gruelling as the wind picked up and there was nothing along the road except signs for moose. Finally, after 2 hrs. of riding, we arrived in St.Anthony after spotting an iceberg in Milan Arm. We were exhausted but our digs were really nice. The Lighthouse Cottages and Convenience store was very welcoming. We ordered in pizza and saluted each other for making it to the most northerly part of Nfld. We had ridden 400 km. in total. The guys were strutting around because they had ridden from sea to sea.

    Wow!

These shots are great. Donna and I have said we must do this sometime, maybe not on bikes, but still—.
    Have fun!
